Target Rating Points (TRP)
Advertising weight counted only within the specific target audience.
Formula
Variables
Example
An ad seen 2M times by a 10M target = 20 TRP
How it works
Target Rating Points (TRP) measure how much advertising exposure a campaign delivers to a chosen audience segment, rather than to the whole market. It is calculated by taking the number of times people in the target group saw the ad and dividing by the total size of that target group, then multiplying by 100 to express the result as a percentage. This works because it answers a simple question: out of every 100 people in the intended audience, how many exposures did the campaign generate?
When to use it
Use TRP when evaluating media plans or ad campaigns aimed at a specific demographic, region, or customer segment. It is especially useful in advertising, media buying, and campaign comparison when the goal is to understand reach within the target audience, not overall audience size.
Worked example, step by step
Suppose a campaign produced 450,000 impressions among women aged 18–24. The target population is 1,500,000 women aged 18–24. TRP = (Impressions among target / Target population) × 100 TRP = (450,000 / 1,500,000) × 100 TRP = 0.3 × 100 TRP = 30 So, the campaign delivered 30 TRP to the target audience.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using total impressions from everyone instead of only impressions among the target group
- Dividing by total market size instead of the target population
- Forgetting to multiply by 100, which leaves the answer as a decimal rather than a rating point value
