How it works

Engagement rate measures what share of an audience actively responds to content instead of just seeing it. It works by comparing the number of interactions such as likes, comments, and shares to the size of the audience, then converting that fraction into a percentage so different posts or accounts can be compared fairly. A higher percentage means a larger portion of the audience is participating.

When to use it

Use this formula when you want to judge how well a social media post, campaign, or account is connecting with its audience. It is especially useful for comparing content performance across posts with different follower counts or different reach levels.

Worked example, step by step

A post gets 320 engagements and the account has 8,000 followers. ER = (Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100 ER = (320 ÷ 8,000) × 100 ER = 0.04 × 100 ER = 4% So, the engagement rate is 4%.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the wrong denominator, such as total impressions when the formula is meant to use followers or reach
  • Forgetting to multiply by 100, which leaves the result as a decimal instead of a percentage
  • Counting only likes and leaving out comments and shares when the data source includes all engagements

Did You Know?

Smaller accounts often post higher engagement rates than mega-influencers.
