How it works
This formula converts a person’s daily calorie target into the number of grams of protein needed if 30% of those calories come from protein. It works because protein provides 4 kilocalories per gram, so you first find 30% of the total calories and then divide by 4 to turn calories into grams.
When to use it
Use this when planning a diet that is intended to be 30% protein, such as in basic meal planning, sports nutrition, or tracking macronutrients. It is helpful when you know total daily calories but need the protein amount in grams.
Worked example, step by step
Suppose daily calories C = 1800 kcal Step 1: Find 30% of calories: 0.30 × 1800 = 540 kcal from protein Step 2: Convert protein calories to grams: 540 ÷ 4 = 135 g Answer: 135 g of protein per day
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the formula for any protein percentage other than 30%
- Forgetting that protein has 4 kcal per gram and dividing by the wrong number
- Mixing up calories and grams, then plugging the grams value into C
Did You Know?
Protein has a high thermic effect, so your body burns extra calories just digesting it.
