Example

5 min/km ⇒ 12 km/h

How it works

Pace tells you how many minutes it takes to cover 1 kilometre, while speed tells you how many kilometres you cover in 1 hour. Since 1 hour is 60 minutes, you convert from minutes per kilometre to kilometres per hour by dividing 60 by the pace. A smaller pace means you cover each kilometre faster, so the speed gets larger.

When to use it

Use this formula when converting running or walking pace from min/km into km/h for training logs, race analysis, or comparing performances. It is especially useful when a watch, app, or coach gives pace but you want speed.

Worked example, step by step

Pace = 6 min/km v = 60 / pace v = 60 / 6 v = 10 So the speed is 10 km/h.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using pace directly as speed without converting minutes to hours
  • Dividing pace by 60 instead of 60 by pace
  • Mixing units, such as using min/mile with this km/h formula

Did You Know?

Elite marathoners sustain almost 21 km/h — a blistering pace under 3 minutes per kilometre for over two hours.
