BMI 27.5 ⇒ 1.10, i.e. 10% over the limit
How it works
BMI Prime is a simple way to express a person's BMI as a fraction of the upper end of the healthy BMI range. It works by dividing the BMI by 25 because 25 kg/m² is commonly used as the cutoff between the healthy and overweight categories for adults. A result of 1.0 means the BMI is exactly at that limit; values below 1.0 are within the healthy range, and values above 1.0 show how far above the limit the BMI is in proportional terms.
When to use it
Use BMI Prime when you want a quick, easy-to-compare measure of how far a BMI is from the healthy upper boundary. It is useful in health education, screening, and comparing people or groups without dealing only in raw BMI units.
Worked example, step by step
BMI = 22.5 BMI Prime = BMI / 25 BMI Prime = 22.5 / 25 BMI Prime = 0.90 Final answer: BMI Prime = 0.90, meaning the BMI is 90% of the upper healthy limit.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using 24.9 instead of 25 as the divisor, which changes the result
- Treating BMI Prime as a separate medical diagnosis rather than a screening ratio
- Forgetting that BMI is based on height and weight, so BMI Prime does not directly measure body fat
