How it works
Win percentage tells you what share of a team’s completed games ended in victory. The formula divides the number of wins by the total number of games played to turn the record into a fraction, then multiplies by 100 so it is expressed as a percentage. This works because a percentage is just a scaled fraction out of 100, making records from different season lengths easier to compare.
When to use it
Use this when comparing teams, players, or seasons that may have played different numbers of games. It is also useful in sports reporting, standings tables, and performance tracking over time.
Worked example, step by step
A basketball team wins 39 games out of 60 played. W% = (W / G) × 100 W% = (39 / 60) × 100 W% = 0.65 × 100 W% = 65% So, the team’s win percentage is 65%.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using total scheduled games instead of games actually played
- Forgetting to multiply by 100 after finding the fraction
- Mixing up wins with points scored or goal difference
