Variables

vSpeed (km/h)
PPace (min/km)

Example

Pace 5 min/km: v = 60÷5 = 12 km/h

How it works

Pace tells you how many minutes it takes to cover 1 kilometre, while speed tells you how many kilometres you cover in 1 hour. Since 1 hour is 60 minutes, dividing 60 by the pace converts "minutes per kilometre" into "kilometres per hour". A smaller pace means faster movement, so the speed becomes larger.

When to use it

Use this when comparing running, walking, or cycling performance given in min/km and you need km/h. It is especially useful for training logs, race analysis, and converting app data into a more familiar speed value.

Worked example, step by step

A runner has a pace of 4.5 min/km. Use the formula: v = 60 / P Substitute the pace: v = 60 / 4.5 Calculate: v = 13.333... Rounded to one decimal place: v ≈ 13.3 km/h

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Multiplying by 60 instead of dividing by the pace
  • Using pace in min/m instead of min/km without converting first
  • Mixing up units and writing the answer in m/s when the formula gives km/h

Did You Know?

A 4 min/km pace equals 15 km/h — the threshold many amateur runners aim to break.
