Variables

R'New rating
ROld rating
KK-factor
SScore (1 win, 0 loss)
EExpected score

Example

R=1600, K=32, win vs expected 0.75: R' = 1600+32(0.25)=1608

How it works

This update rule changes a rating by comparing what actually happened in a game with what the rating system predicted. If the result is better than expected, the rating rises; if it is worse, the rating falls, and the size of the change is controlled by the K-factor. The formula comes from iterative rating systems in which each match is treated like a small correction to a player's estimated strength.

When to use it

Use this when you need to update rankings after head-to-head competition, such as chess, esports, online matchmaking, or league play. It is especially useful when you want ratings to reflect both recent results and the difficulty of the opponent.

Worked example, step by step

Given: R = 1450, K = 24, S = 0.5, E = 0.30 Step 1: Find the surprise factor: S - E = 0.5 - 0.30 = 0.20 Step 2: Multiply by K: 24 × 0.20 = 4.8 Step 3: Add to the old rating: R' = 1450 + 4.8 = 1454.8 Final answer: R' = 1454.8

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using 1 for a draw and 0.5 for a win instead of the other way around
  • Forgetting that E is an expected score between 0 and 1, not the opponent's rating
  • Applying the formula without checking whether the K-factor is meant to be fixed or changed by the system

Did You Know?

Arpad Elo designed the system for chess in the 1960s; it now rates footballers, video-game players and even universities.
