2100 points in 75 games: PPG = 28
How it works
Points per game is a rate that tells you how many points are scored on average in each game. It works by dividing the total points by the number of games, which spreads the scoring evenly across all games to give a fair comparison. This is useful because two players or teams can play different numbers of games, but PPG lets you compare their scoring productivity on the same scale.
When to use it
Use this formula when you want to compare scoring performance across players, teams, or seasons with different game totals. It is common in basketball, hockey, and other sports where total points are accumulated over many games.
Worked example, step by step
A basketball player scores 1440 points over 60 games. PPG = P / G PPG = 1440 / 60 PPG = 24 The player averages 24 points per game.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dividing by points instead of games
- Using only one game's score instead of the total points from all games
- Forgetting that PPG is an average, not the exact score in every game
