S=90, CR=71.2, SR=125: D=(18.8)×0.904 ≈ 17.0
How it works
A golf handicap differential converts a raw score into a number that can be compared across different courses and tee sets. The score is first measured relative to the course rating, which represents what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot, and then adjusted by the slope rating so that harder courses for bogey golfers do not unfairly inflate the result. The constant 113 is the standard slope baseline, so dividing by SR and multiplying by 113 rescales every round onto the same reference difficulty.
When to use it
Use this when calculating a player’s handicap-related performance from a single round, especially if the round was played on a course with nonstandard difficulty. It is also useful when comparing rounds from different venues or tee boxes on a common scale.
Worked example, step by step
Suppose an adjusted gross score of S = 84 was posted on a course with CR = 69.8 and SR = 121. Step 1: Subtract the course rating from the score: 84 - 69.8 = 14.2 Step 2: Compute the slope factor: 113 / 121 ≈ 0.9347 Step 3: Multiply: D = 14.2 × 0.9347 ≈ 13.27 Final answer: D ≈ 13.3
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the unadjusted gross score instead of the adjusted gross score
- Swapping course rating and slope rating in the formula
- Forgetting that a higher slope rating reduces the multiplier because 113 is divided by SR
Did You Know?
The number 113 is the slope rating of a course of standard difficulty — the system's baseline.
