36 runs in 8 overs: Econ = 4.5
How it works
Bowling economy rate measures how many runs a bowler gives away for each over they bowl. It is found by dividing the total runs conceded by the number of overs bowled, so the result is a fair per-over comparison even if bowlers have bowled different amounts. A lower economy rate means the bowler was more economical and restricted scoring better.
When to use it
Use this when comparing bowlers in cricket, especially in limited-overs matches where controlling runs is important. It is also useful for judging how expensive a bowler was across a spell, innings, or tournament.
Worked example, step by step
Runs conceded = 48 Overs bowled = 12 Econ = R / O Econ = 48 / 12 Econ = 4 Final answer: Economy rate = 4.0 runs per over
Common mistakes to avoid
- Dividing by wickets taken instead of overs bowled
- Using balls bowled as the denominator without converting to overs
- Forgetting to keep the units as runs per over
Did You Know?
An economy under 4 in one-day cricket marks a bowler as genuinely miserly.
