How it works

This formula converts a temperature measured on the Celsius scale into the Fahrenheit scale. The factor 9/5 adjusts for the different size of the two degree intervals, and the +32 shifts the value because the two scales start at different zero points. In other words, Fahrenheit degrees are smaller and the freezing point of water is set at 32°F instead of 0°C.

When to use it

Use it when you need to read or compare temperatures from countries or resources that use different temperature scales. It is common in weather, cooking, science classes, and any problem that gives a temperature in Celsius but asks for Fahrenheit.

Worked example, step by step

Convert 25°C to Fahrenheit Step 1: Start with the formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 Step 2: Substitute 25 for °C: °F = 25 × 9/5 + 32 Step 3: Multiply: 25 × 9/5 = 45 Step 4: Add 32: 45 + 32 = 77 Answer: 25°C = 77°F

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to add 32 after multiplying
  • Multiplying by 5/9 instead of 9/5
  • Using the formula in reverse when trying to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

Did You Know?

The Celsius and Fahrenheit scales cross at a single point: −40° reads the same on both.
