Variables

SSeed quantity (kg)
DDensity (kg/ha)
AArea (ha)

Example

D=100 kg/ha, A=8 ha: S = 800 kg

How it works

This formula helps you find how much seed is needed for a field by multiplying the recommended seeding rate per hectare by the total area to be planted. It works because the seed requirement increases in direct proportion to land area: doubling the area doubles the seed needed, as long as the planting density stays the same. The result gives the total seed mass required for the whole job.

When to use it

Use this when planning sowing for crops and you know the recommended seed rate and the size of the field. It is useful for buying seed, estimating costs, and checking whether enough seed is available before planting.

Worked example, step by step

Given: D = 75 kg/ha, A = 12 ha Step 1: Write the formula: S = D × A Step 2: Substitute the values: S = 75 × 12 Step 3: Multiply: S = 900 Answer: S = 900 kg of seed

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using area in acres or square metres without converting to hectares
  • Confusing seed density (kg/ha) with seed spacing or plant count
  • Forgetting to multiply by the full field area and using only part of the land

Did You Know?

Sow too thin and weeds move in; too thick and plants compete — seed rate balances the two.
