Henry's Law

The concentration of a gas dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the liquid.

Formula

C=kHPC = k_H \, P

Variables

CDissolved gas concentration
k_HHenry's law constant
PPartial pressure of the gas

Example

A fizzy drink loses its CO₂ once opened because the pressure above the liquid drops.

Did You Know?

Henry's law explains the 'bends' — nitrogen dissolved in a diver's blood bubbles out if they surface too fast.
